The modern design with its intense, contrasting use of colours and exotic shapes is based on the art movements 'primitivism' and 'fauvism' (e.g. Paul Gauguin, Henri Matisse). Exotic motifs were very popular after the Art Deco period. In this 'new period' after the First World War, people travelled a lot more and met new cultures while doing so.
