Alfons Maria Mucha (1860-1939) was an artist born in the Czech Republic. His works are inextricably linked to the Art Nouveau movement, popular at the beginning of the 20th century.
The melancholic and mysterious female figures of the Art Nouveau period (1880 - 1915) are attractive and imposing. The undulating lines of these beautiful ladies with their graceful hair like whips make an unforgettable impression. Alphons Mucha has drawn and painted countless women with graceful lines in fresh pastel colours.
The posters he produced in Paris are very well-known. In 1894, he made his breakthrough with a poster for the play Gismonde, starring the French actress Sarah Bernhardt. She was the star of the Parisian theatre. Mucha portrays Bernhardt life-sized, as a divine, timeless appearance, surrounded by aureoles of mosaic, sweeping lines and stylised floral patterns. This poster is so popular that it is even stolen from the street!
